Charles W. Peale (1742-1827) might be one of the most expensive American painters but all his work does not reach this enviable status.
This portrait of James W. Depeyster, an uncle of his second wife Elizabeth is an oil on camvas made in 1798 and measures 29 3/4 x 25 in.
Estimated by Christie's NYC between 70,000 and 100,000 dollars, this picture fetched this week $ 104,500 far from the 21.3 million reached by his portrait of George Washington in 2005.
The lesson of this sale is the always the same : reflecting the say that goes "what matters is not what you know but who you know" in matter of Fine Art one can say "what matters is not what you paint but who you paint..."
